2007 was a monumental and unforgettable year for Armenian-Americans. As you know, H.Res106, the Armenian Genocide recognition resolution successfully passed the House foreign Relations Committee in October.
This was no easy task considering supporters of this non-binding resolution faced direct pressure from the administration, even from the President himself, to rescind their support. As if that weren’t enough, Members had additional pressure brought upon them by influential lobbyists paid by the Turkish Government. Although some co-sponsors withdrew their support, most did not and this historic resolution was passed 27-21.
The passage of this resolution in committee can be attributed to two distinct factors. The first is the massive and well coordinated grass roots effort that resulted in thousands of calls, letters and emails from constituents to their Members to urge support of this resolution. The second is the unwavering support of this measure by several brave men and women in the United States Congress that have been advocates of Armenian-American issues and friends to our community throughout their careers.
ARMENPAC, the Armenian American Political Action Committee works directly with our friends in Congress and can attest to their hard work and dedication in support of Armenian-American issues.
For that consistent support in the face of staunch opposition, ARMENPAC has decided to honor and profile 12 Members of Congress throughout 2008 year in our new “Members of the Month” section of our website. ARMENPAC is excited to create this opportunity to publically thank and recognize the efforts of our many friends in Congress for their leadership and commitment to support Armenian-American issues.
Please be sure to check back every month to see who made the ARMENPAC list of 12 most influential and supportive Members of Congress advocating in support of Armenian-American issues.
